Cataract surgery recovery is generally smooth and well-tolerated, but knowing what to expect can make the process feel much less uncertain. Here's a general timeline of healing, along with guidance on caring for your eye in the days and weeks after surgery.
The First 24 Hours
You'll go home the same day as your surgery. Vision may be blurry or hazy at first — this is normal and typically improves within a day or two. You'll wear a protective shield over the treated eye, especially while sleeping, to prevent accidental rubbing or pressure.
Using Your Eye Drops
You will be prescribed eye drops — typically to prevent infection and reduce inflammation — to use for several weeks following surgery. Using them exactly as directed, even after your eye starts to feel normal, is one of the most important parts of a smooth recovery.
Activity Guidelines During Healing
Every recovery plan is personalized, but general guidance during the first week or two often includes:
- Avoiding rubbing or pressing on the treated eye
- Avoiding swimming pools, hot tubs, and dusty environments
- Avoiding strenuous exercise or heavy lifting temporarily
- Wearing sunglasses outdoors to reduce light sensitivity
- Being cautious with eye makeup near the surgical site
Dr. Ma will confirm exactly which restrictions apply to your case and when it's safe to resume your normal routine.
What's Normal vs. What to Report
Mild grittiness, light sensitivity, and slightly blurry vision are common in the first few days. However, contact our office promptly if you experience:
- Sudden or worsening pain
- A significant decrease in vision
- Increasing redness or discharge
- Flashes of light or a curtain-like shadow in your vision
Follow-Up Visits
You'll typically be seen shortly after surgery to confirm your eye is healing properly, with additional visits scheduled as needed over the following weeks. These check-ins allow any concerns to be caught early and help confirm your vision is progressing as expected.
When Will My Vision Fully Stabilize?
Most patients see significant improvement within the first week, with vision continuing to refine over four to six weeks as the eye fully settles. If you need an updated glasses prescription, this is usually done once your eye has stabilized.
